David Gleerup created the topic: Starting up WH40K again

Hey Guys!

So I have decided to write about how my progress back into WH40K is coming along. I am writing in English because in many ways it’s easier for me and it is expected that I make writing / grammar mistakes ;)

More than a year ago I decided to start up WH40K with a friend. We played WHFB together about 3-4 years ago, but took a break because we were getting stuck on painting / gluing all the models together (have an unpainted Skaven army, lots and lots of clan rats). Both of us have played WHFB in our teens and wanted to start up again. I used to play WH40K as well, had a Space Wolves army, about 2k with a few normal SMs. I still got some old Long Fangs (which I understand they don’t make anymore?), but most of my army is gone now... So when I decided to start up WH40K again and I wasn’t looking to build on my SW army (or what was left of it). Not many armies are interesting to me, so the choice was fairly easy for me. I wanted a new army, so I knew there wouldn’t come new models next year, be fun to play (I know that is kinda relative) and of course look great (again relative ;) ). The Dark Eldar army was perfect for me and to me it’s one of the best looking armies out there, I also like their speed and they don’t have any magic (one thing less to worry about) unless you take allies. I still have to find out how effective it is, but I do read that they can be quiet good, but they are fragile and any mistakes on the board will be very expensive for you. Being almost a complete noob, after an about 15 year break, I do feel that I will let them down horribly and will need a lot of practice with them...

More than a year ago I was living by myself; I did have more money and could buy stuff I wouldn’t get now. I got a lot of Dark Eldar, most of them still in their boxes, but being new I didn’t really know what to get, so got a lot of basic stuff. Later when I find out what works for me, I will start buying new models. It also feels kinda silly to buy more stuff now, when I have so many unpainted models. I also got an Airbrush, still very noobish with it, but slowly getting the hang of it. I was thinking an Airbrush would help me a lot with basecoat, shade, preshade, make patterns etc. But finding it a bit harder than expected. Airbrushing vehicles is where it should really shine, but haven’t started on those yet... About a year ago I moved in with my gf and there wasn’t much room for my hobby, so had to put it more or less on standby. I had all my models, airbrush and different hobby items needed to cut them out and glue them together, but no room to get started... Then things started to happen really fast between us and all of a sudden we brought a house together in Taastrup. The house needed quiet a lot of work and I have spent 4-5 months working on it, but in the end I got a man cave! A room just for myself in the basement and I were ready to paint my models.

So got an Airbrush, some Vallejo paint for airbrush and then needed some normal paints. I was looking for good offers on citadel paint, but wasn’t able to find any and not knowing what color to paint my army I needed a bit of everything. I did find a very good offer on Warpaint - The Army Painter, so got a big box of those.

Side note - I don’t know when you guys buy your GW stuff, but getting it at GW just seems too expensive. The website I use the most is giftsforgeeks.org.uk/ , haven’t had any problems with them and sometimes you do get very good offers. You can’t get all GW items on the site, but it is cheaper. It used to be cheaper (at least 20%), but maybe the success of the website have gone to his head /shrugs ;)

I can be very indecisive and have had a rather difficult time deciding what color to paint my models. I initially wanted to paint them in the color of the Kabal of the Obsidian Rose (black with orange highlights), but couldn’t get my models to look anything like that... Highlights are not my strong side to say the least... I got a book about painting GW models and that gave me an idea to use GW glaze. Then I just had to decide which of the 3 glazes I wanted to use, green, blue or red. It’s fairly simple to use glaze and it can give a cool effect. It quickly became apparent that the green glaze gave the best result for me.
I have found that the Warpaint it a bit annoying, there isn’t a cap where you can easily get to the paint when you open it (if that makes any sense?), but you have to press out small drops and use the paint from there. So I find that there is a small amount of waste every time I use a new color.
Even now that I have decided how to paint my Dark Eldar, I am not completely sure... Not completely happy, I was looking for something more dark or black, but still wanted it to be original... The color scheme I have decided on is metal armor with green glaze, white eye helm color (very hard to see with the amount of Black shade I use...), necrotic green on clothes with black shade. Weapons are mostly black / metal with glaze / shade.
The only completely painted models I have now… But now that I know what color to paint them, it should be going a lot faster soon.

Thanks for reading, I will try and keep this topic up to date and the next post will not be so long ;)
Any comments are very welcome :)

\Christian

Hmm kunne bruge lidt feedback

Mine DE er malet efter et concept art billede jeg fandt over Kabal of the White Flame fra Path of the Renegade bogen.
